You can put a discount on the invoice and there is an extra line item with the balances saying how much was the discount. You can apply it as a percentage or as a flat fee, you can apply it to labor or expenses or both. The discount line will specify the amount/percentage and if it was applied to labor/expenses/both. This way, you can still keep on the invoice the number of hours you worked and how much it would have been.

You'll see the discount settings at the left column of settings on the Invoice Details. Just make sure that the invoice is still in "Pre-Bill" status (unfinalized) and that you save your changes once you apply the discount.

    Jessica,

Thanks for your response. I'm aware of the current discount option, but it's not exactly what I described. Currently it just applies either a percentage discount or a flat discount, but the client can't tell what line items that discount may be associated with. I'd like to see the option to add an additional column to my invoices so that both service time and billable time were displayed. Then my client would see that although the normal charge for a phone call was 0.2 hours at $X, I've reduced that to zero.

Oh I see what you mean, Kevin. :) So way for instance you have that work entry of 0.2 hours $X on the invoice. What you do is click on that line item, uncheck "billable" and make sure that "Exclude from the invoice" is also unchecked, and click the Save button. Your line time will remain with the work hours, but the billable amount will either be "0.00" or you can do a settings adjustment to change that ("0.00") to "no charge."

Jessica. Thank you again. This is better than showing no work at all. However, it doesn't display for the client the amount that has been discounted. I guess I can add it up and include it in a message at the bottom of the invoice, but it would be very nice if it was either also displayed on the line item, or automatically calculated and displayed elsewhere on the invoice.

However, if the line item contains both billable time and discounted time, it will have to be split between two work entries. Currently, a single work entry can either contain all billable time or un-billable time.

The best alternative we have for that is: the "Save & Duplicate" button. So let's say you have a work entry that contains 3 hours for a meeting and you want to only charge for two hours of it. On the Invoice details page:

    1. Click on that one item
    2. Change the amount of hours to 2
    3. Click the "Save & duplicate" button. The screen will almost come off as if nothing happened.
    4. Change the amount of hours to 1.
    5. Uncheck "Billable."
    6. Click the Save button.

Ah, ok, I have a better understanding of your idea/feature request: Have a discount line that totals the monetary amount of unbilled work to display how much total was not charged.

    Exactly.

Date              Description of Service                                      Time spent   @ $Rate      Total          Billable time    @ modified rate ($0 or other)      Billable total

Kevin's point is on target and very important. We need to be able to show the client a line item reduction, without the nuisance of making two entries.  It would also be wonderful to have totals on the invoice for actual time worked and time charged (billed).

I see these comments were from 7 years ago.  Was this feature ever added? (i.e. to be able to show, within the line item, BOTH the time actually worked, and the time actually billed?  This is important for example, to be able to show the client that we spent X time on a call but that only a certain portion of that was actually billed.  To the client this demonstrates the attorney's courtesy of not billing them for the entire call, so it's an important client relationship tool for some clients.
