Balance Adjustment in Accounting

When entering adjustment have a ( fee ) prompt and a ( costs ) prompt so you let the program know where to take the deduction. Right now , it takes from the balance. So is it deducting from the fees or the costs. If a Client deducts a costs how would we know if it was taken from the attorney's fees and how would that effect reporting.
