Overview
For Legal Pro and Enterprise plan users, the Matter Details report shows the details of each matter, including type, billing method, and total time. Use it to review a matter's setup and time totals at a glance, or to compare time across the matters for a single client.
Accessing the Matter Details Report
- Go to the Reports tab.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Scroll or search for “Matter Details.” If searched, look for the result with the Advanced badge next to it.
- Click Open.
Using Filters
The Matter Details Report opens with these filters:
- Client
- Matter
- Assigned To
Click Filters to add more: Created Date, Account Manager, Matter Type, Matter Status, Closed Date, Due Date, Billing Method, and Bill Frequency.
If your firm is on the Enterprise plan, any custom fields you've configured are also available here as additional filters. Custom field availability is contextual to the report; only fields for the record types actually included in this report will appear. For example, invoice custom fields won't show up as filters on a report that doesn't include invoice data.
Once you land on a combination you'll use again, click Save Filters to to mark it as a favorite, making it accessible from the Favorites report category.
Running the Report
Set your filters and click Run Report. Unlike most Advanced Reports, this one opens grouped by Client by default. If it comes back empty, check your filters first, that's the most common reason a report shows nothing.
Understanding the Report Grid
Each row within a Client group is a single matter. The default columns are:
- Matter Name / Matter ID
- Client ID
- Matter Type
- Created Date
- Due Date
- Assigned To
- Billing Method
- Labor Time / Billable Time
- Travel Time
Customizing the Report Grid
- Columns: click Columns to show or hide any of the fields above, plus other available columns beyond the defaults listed here.
- Enterprise plan firms will also see the same custom fields available here as additional columns, following the same contextual rule as the filters above.
- Reordering and resizing: drag column headers to rearrange them, or drag column borders to resize.
- Sorting: click a column header to sort by that field; click it again to reverse the order.
- Group By: the report is grouped by Client by default. You can uncheck it, or group by Assigned To, Billing Method, Matter Type, or Matter Status instead.
- Page size: the items-per-page menu at the bottom controls how many rows show at once (100 by default, up to 1000), with page controls next to it for the rest.
Exporting the Report
Click Export and choose Export to Excel to download the current view.

- Group by Matter Type or Billing Method to compare time across different kinds of work.
- Filter by Matter Status to focus on open matters, or by Due Date to catch matters approaching a deadline.
