Overview
For Legal Pro and Enterprise plan users, the Monthly Summary report breaks down time, expenses, and billable amounts by month, then by Client and Matter within each month. Use it to track billing trends over a longer date range instead of a single period.
Accessing the Monthly Summary Report
- Go to the Reports tab.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Scroll or search for “Monthly Summary.” If searched, look for the one with the Advanced badge next to it.
- Click Open.
Using Filters
The Monthly Summary Report opens with these filters:
- Date: choose a preset range (e.g. Today, This Month, This Year) or a Custom Range.
- Client
- Matter
- Users
- Account Manager
- Currency Code: defaults to your firm's primary currency. Change it if you bill across multiple currencies and want to isolate one.
Click Filters to add more: Client Type, Matter Type, Matter Status, Activity Type, Expense Type, Billable, Billing Status, and Billed/Unbilled.
If your firm is on the Enterprise plan, any custom fields you've configured are also available here as additional filters. Custom field availability is contextual to the report; only fields for the record types actually included in this report will appear. For example, invoice custom fields won't show up as filters on a report that doesn't include invoice data.
Once you land on a combination you'll use again, click Save Filters to to mark it as a favorite, making it accessible from the Favorites report category.
Running the Report
Set your filters and click Run Report. Unlike most Advanced Reports, this one always opens grouped, first by Month, then by Client and Matter within each month. If it comes back empty, check your date range first, that's the most common reason a report shows nothing.
Scrolling right shows the rest of the default columns, including the dollar totals for each group:
Understanding the Report Grid
Each row within a Month / Client / Matter group is a single time or expense entry. The default columns are:
- Date
- User
- Client ID / Matter ID
- Private Description
- Billing Status
- Rate
- Labor Time / Billable Time
- Unit Price / Quantity
- Cost Price / Sell Price
- Billable Amount / Non-Billable Amount
Customizing the Report Grid
- Columns: click Columns to show or hide any of the fields above, plus other available columns beyond the defaults listed here.
- Enterprise plan firms will also see the same custom fields available here as additional columns, following the same contextual rule as the filters above.
- Reordering and resizing: drag column headers to rearrange them, or drag column borders to resize.
- Sorting: click a column header to sort by that field; click it again to reverse the order.
- Group By: the report is grouped by Month, Client, and Matter by default. You can uncheck any of these three, or add User as a fourth level, but you can't group by other fields the way you can on most Advanced Reports.
- Page size: the items-per-page menu at the bottom controls how many rows show at once (100 by default, up to 1000), with page controls next to it for the rest.
Exporting the Report
Click Export and choose Export to Excel to download the current view.
Tips & Common Use Cases
- Run this over a full year to spot which months were busiest for a client or the firm overall.
- Use it instead of the Summary Report when month-over-month trends matter more than a single period's total.
- Collapse the groups to get a quick month-by-month total without scrolling through every entry.
- Narrow to one Client or Matter to see how their billing has trended over time.
