Overview
For Legal Pro and Enterprise plan users, the Client/Matter Type report shows billable time and amounts grouped and totaled by Matter Type, then by User. Use it to see which types of matters are generating the most billable work, and who is doing that work.
Accessing the Client/Matter Type Report
- Go to the Reports tab.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Scroll or search for “Client/Matter Type.” If searched, look for the result with the Advanced badge next to it.
- Click Open.
Using Filters
The Client/Matter Type Report opens with these filters:
- Date: choose a preset range (e.g. Today, This Month, This Year) or a Custom Range. Defaults to This Month.
- Client
- Matter
- Users
- Client Type
- Matter Type
Click Filters to add more: Account Manager.
If your firm is on the Enterprise plan, any custom fields you've configured are also available here as additional filters. Custom field availability is contextual to the report; only fields for the record types actually included in this report will appear. For example, invoice custom fields won't show up as filters on a report that doesn't include invoice data.
Once you land on a combination you'll use again, click Save Filters to to mark it as a favorite, making it accessible from the Favorites report category.
Running the Report
Set your filters and click Run Report. The grid below updates with matching billable time entries, grouped by Matter Type and User. If it comes back empty, check your date range first, that's the most common reason a report shows nothing.
Understanding the Report Grid
Each row is a single billable time entry. The default columns are:
- Date
- Client / Client ID
- Matter / Matter ID
- Client Type
- Billable Time
- Billable Amount
Note that Client Type is a custom field. If it isn't populated for your clients, this column and the Client Type grouping will show as blank or NA.
Customizing the Report Grid
-
Columns: click Columns to show or hide any of the fields above, plus other available columns beyond the defaults listed here.
- Enterprise plan firms will also see the same custom fields available here as additional columns, following the same contextual rule as the filters above.
- Reordering and resizing: drag column headers to rearrange them, or drag column borders to resize.
- Sorting: click a column header to sort by that field; click it again to reverse the order.
- Group By: the report opens grouped by Matter Type, then User. You can uncheck either, or add Client Type as a third grouping level.
- Page size: the items-per-page menu at the bottom controls how many rows show at once (100 by default, up to 1000), with page controls next to it for the rest.
Exporting the Report
Click Export and choose Export to Excel to download the current view.
Tips & Common Use Cases
- Use this report to see which Matter Types bring in the most billable time and revenue across the firm.
- Populate the Client Type custom field on your clients first if you want the Client Type breakdown to be meaningful.
- Narrow to a single Matter Type to compare performance across the Users working that type of matter.
