Overview
For Legal Pro and Enterprise plan users, the WIP Summary report gives you a running view of billable time that hasn't been invoiced yet, whether it's still unbilled or already sitting on a pre-bill. Use it to see how much work is in the pipeline for a client or matter, or to check how much unbilled work each timekeeper is carrying.
Accessing the WIP Summary Report
- Go to the Reports tab.
- Select the Advanced tab.
- Scroll or search for “WIP Summary.” If searched, look for the result with the Advanced badge next to it.
- Click Open.
Using Filters
The WIP Summary Report opens with these filters:
- Date: choose a preset range (e.g. Today, This Month, This Year) or a Custom Range.
- Client
- Matter
- Users
- Account Manager
Click Filters to add more: Client Type, Matter Type, Matter Status, Activity Type, and Currency Code.
If your firm is on the Enterprise plan, any custom fields you've configured are also available here as additional filters. Custom field availability is contextual to the report; only fields for the record types actually included in this report will appear. For example, invoice custom fields won't show up as filters on a report that doesn't include invoice data.
Once you land on a combination you'll use again, click Save Filters to to mark it as a favorite, making it accessible from the Favorites report category.
Running the Report
Set your filters and click Run Report. The grid below updates with matching billable time entries that haven't been invoiced yet. If it comes back empty, check your date range first, that's the most common reason a report shows nothing.
Understanding the Report Grid
Each row is a single billable time entry that's unbilled or on a pre-bill invoice. The default columns are:
- Activity Type
- User
- Date
- Client / Client ID
- Matter / Matter ID
- Rate
- Billable Time
- Billable Amount
- Private Description
Customizing the Report Grid
-
Columns: click Columns to show or hide any of the fields above, plus other available columns beyond the defaults listed here.
- Enterprise plan firms will also see the same custom fields available here as additional columns, following the same contextual rule as the filters above.
- Reordering and resizing: drag column headers to rearrange them, or drag column borders to resize.
- Sorting: click a column header to sort by that field; click it again to reverse the order.
- Group By: click Group By and choose one or more fields — Month, User, Activity Type, Client, Client ID, Matter, Matter ID, Client Type, Matter Type, Account Manager, and more. Each grouping level adds a subtotal row, and Collapse folds every group down to just its subtotal.
- Page size: the items-per-page menu at the bottom controls how many rows show at once (100 by default, up to 1000), with page controls next to it for the rest.
Grouping Example
Grouping by Client rolls every entry under its client, with a subtotal of hours and billable amount for each:

Tips & Common Use Cases
- Group by Client or Matter before a billing cycle to see exactly how much billable work is to be invoiced this month.
- Group by User to check how much unbilled or pre-bill work each timekeeper is carrying.
- Run this ahead of invoicing to catch entries that haven't made it onto a bill yet.
- Compare against the Summary Report when you need the full billable picture rather than just the work still in the pipeline.
